The bolzano-merano line
Unlike the Merano-Malles line, which is run exclusively by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, the responsibility for the Bolzano - Merano line lies with the Italian national railway authority (Trenitalia).
In the interest of flexibility and improved service coordination, several crossings were established in 2006-2007. Investments were shared equally by the Provincial Authorities and RFI (national network operator). In order to provide better access to the train carriages, platform height was raised to 55 centimetres from the rails in Sigmundskron, Vilpian, Gargazon and Lana-Postal. Special ramps now provide easier access to platforms and shelters, while new pedestrian lights and barriers make crossing the tracks less dangerous. In Siebeneich and Terlan improvement works are due to begin soon.
Conservation work will be carried out mostly by the Municipalities, starting in 2008.
New shelters and new functions
At the end of 2007 platforms at stations on the Bolzano-Merano line were fitted with new shelters. The new facilities were compliant with the original project by Architect Irmgard Mitterer. According to Provincial Minister for Transport Thomas Widmann, these shelters are “the hallmark of this railway line”. The shelters provide protection, as well as information on the history and culture of each location.
Aspiring to ‘make the invisible visible’, the glass panels to the rear of the new shelters have been decorated with pictures and texts on the most interesting aspects of the various towns: historical facts and figures, some of which relate to the railway line.
