New mobility in South Tyrol: green, comfortable and safe

The Province of South Tyrol has decided to tackle today's mobility issues by enhancing public transport.
Over the last few years, the local Transport Office has boosted public transport services, placing the railway network at the heart of its policies, alongside a vast bus network serving the entire province.
South Tyrol's railway network features four main lines:
- Brennero line (Brennero – Bolzano – Ala)
- Venosta Valley line (Merano - Malles)
- Merano line (Bolzano – Merano)
- Pustertal line (Fortezza – San Candido)

The local rail network draws upon the concept that inspired the Venosta Valley railway. Having been abandoned for many years, the railway was revamped and re-opened in 2005, and equipped with cutting-edge rolling stock.
In 2008, the Provincial Government of South Tyrol signed a new series of agreements with RFI (Italian Railway Network Authority). As a result of these agreements, the latest rolling stock was purchased for the Pustertal railway, many stations were refurbished, and a significant modernisation effort was carried on many other stations thanks to funding from local government and the South Tyrol Transport Authority (STA).

The South Tyrol Schedule project has been launched in the province of Bolzano to introduce a new schedule for local public transport. The project was launched in conjunction with the re-opening of the Venosta Valley railway in May 2005. Another important step was the introduction of the “Treno Alto Adige” service on the Pustertal railway in December 2008.
