history
It was mainly down to economic interests that a private company decided to build the Bolzano – Merano railway. Inaugurated in 1881, the railway was a catalyst in putting Merano on the map as a holiday and spa destination. The banks of the river Adige were strengthened in order to allow building work to begin. Alongside passenger transport, this railway has seen a great deal of freight traffic over the last few decades, thanks also to a series of junctions branching off to nearby firms. The railway line measures 31.8 km in length and is part of the national railway network. Rolling stock running is from Trenitalia, province of South Tyrol and SAD.
